Sep. 09, 1953 - The End Of A Six Mile Chase In The Channel: This was the end of a six-mile chase in the channel yesterday - as the 20 ft. sloop” Lydia” tied up in Dover Harbour. Police in a motor boat chased the Lydia for more than an hour before towing her in. Last night they detained a man who will be handed over to Southend police and charged with stealing the sloop which is valued at ~ 600. It was reported missing from Westeliff-on-Sea on Wednesday, Wednesday night. Det. Ins. 0. Lindsay. who led the chase said” The sloop had sail and an auxiliary engineer at travelled at tremendous speed. We were flat out, but several times we thought we had lost her. Suitcase and cartons of food and photographic equipment were found on the vessel.
