Scott, John
The brig 'Mary' is identified by her name on the white pennant flying from her mast. A second view showing the ship from the rear is shown alongside the main view. This arrangement followed a tradition that had become rather old-fashioned by this time. In 1826, James Mather of South Shields is said to have invented the first on-board lifeboat for the 'Mary', which was built by his father, a Newcastle shipbuilder. The artist John Scott was one of the North East's best known painters of shipping scenes.
