Mordecai 's Triumph by J James Tissot. Illustration to Book of Esther, 6.11: 'Then took Haman the apparel and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai, and brought him on horseback through the street of the city, and proclaimed before him'. Following Mordecai 's refusal to bow down to Haman the Agagite, the latter resolved to murder the Jews throughout the Persian empire. Esther distributed arms in order that Jews could protect themselves. As a result of the successful counter-attack, Mordecai was raised to a high rank.
