Panamanians visit the tomb January 9, 2001 of Ascanio Arosemena, a student of the National Institute high school, who was the first Panamanian to die when he was shot by an U.S. soldier in 1964. Hundreds of Panamanians marched to the Amador cemetery to commemorate the 37th anniversary of the civil war between the U.S. and Panama, caused by the burning of the Panamanian flag by U.S. residents in the Canal Zone (Zonians) when Panamanian students tried to raise their flag next to the U.S. flag at the Balboa High School in the area of the Canal Zone controlled then by U.S. More than 20 locals lost their lives.
