Bearded Col. Robert O. Tyler, the figure with a hand thrust into his coat, posing with his artillerymen in Fort Richardson near Arlington, Virginia, on a misty overcast day during late 1861; officially, his regiment was still listed as the 4th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Regiment, not being re-constituted as the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery until January 2, 1862. The earthen field-fortification’s 24-pounder guns are mounted alternately on garrison carriages and front-pintle barbette carriages.
