Image description: Carpenters' Hall, 1770, Founded 1724. Here in 1774 the First Continental Congress settled the foundation principles of American freedom, and Patrick Henry declared, "The distinctions between Virginians, Pennsylvanians, New Yorkers, and New Englanders are no more. I am not a Virginian, but an American." The first act of the Congress was to select Charles Thomson, "the Sam Adams of Philadelphia," as its secretary.
