View eastward from abandoned Fort Moultrie, Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, April 1865 (b/w photo)

View from atop the rampart of Fort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, a few weeks after having been abandoned by its last Confederate defenders during the closing stages of the Civil War. A 32-pounder gun with a 6.5-inch bore, banded and rifled and with a split-jaw cascabel, sits on a front-pintle barbette-carriage in the foreground, with an empty strapped-shell resting against the breast-height wall to its left. Desolate Confederate fortifications stretch away eastward along the beachfront, to the open ocean in the distance; note the palmettos and damaged dwellings. One of a stereographic pair of wet-collodion glass negatives, probably attributable to George N. Barnard, cleaned and repaired.
