Civil War drum of the 9th Vermont Regiment, U.S. Infantry, circa 1863. The regiment was mustered into service July 9, 1862 and commanded by Colonel Edward H. Ripley, who in 1864 was made Brevet Brigadier General. The regiment served in North and South Carolina and entered Richmond after its evacuation and was stationed there until mustered out (all except four companies). In 1864 the regiment was moved to New York City during the presidential election to help keep the peace. It returned to the field November 17, 1864.
