Sneden was a map-maker for the Union Army during the American Civil War; his seven volume diary concerns his service in the 40th New York Infantry Division and as a topographical engineer in the III Corps, Army of the Potomac; the Virginia was the first steam-powered ironclad ship of the Confederate Navy; arrived in Hampton Roads on 8th March and succeeded in ramming the Cumberland which soon sank;
