Image description

Snohomish, Washington native Karen Thorndike, the first American woman to circumnavigate the world solo south of the five great capes, sails aboard her 36-foot sailboat 'Amelia' and waves to a greeting crowd at Elliott Bay in Seattle October 23. The 56-year-old Thorndike started her two-year, two-week voyage in San Diego on August 4, 1996 and completed the trek on August 18, 1998. Thorndike encountered fierce winds, high-seas and a near-fatal bout of influenza during the 33,000 nautical mile voyage and said today "there were many times I didn't think I'd ever see Seattle again." Thorndike's voyage was tracked by thousands of people worldwide on the Internet. APB/KM/ME
