Fazul Abdullah Mohammed was born in the capital, but later left for religious training in Pakistan. US prosecutors say he played a key role in the bombings of US embassies in Dar-es-Salaam and Nairobi in 1998 that killed 224 people. Many residents dismiss the idea that militants might operate on the islands, which have a tradition of tolerant Islam and where outsiders would find it difficult to blend in to a close-knit society.
