Image description

Young Afghan victim of a land mine explosion Shapoor Khan, 12, looks at a mirror as he learns to walk using artificial limbs with the help of a doctor at an orthopaedic centre run by the International Committee for Red Cross (ICRC) in Kabul, June 23, 2003. Khan, who aspires to be a physician, lost his left leg when he stepped on a landmine while returning from Pakistan, where his family had gone to take refuge from the 2001 war in Afghanistan. [His father, Abdul Ghani Rehman, says though Khan puts up a brave face in front of others, he often cries in confines of his house. Afghanistan is one of the most heavily mined countries in the world and the landmines left over from Afghanistan's 23 years of war still claim more than 100 victims a month.]
