Image description

‘The Main Street in the Bazaar at Caubul in the Fruit Season’, 1839 (c). Tinted lithograph from bound volume of 26 tinted lithographs, 'Sketches in Afghanistan', 1838-1842, by Louis and Charles Haghe after James Atkinson, published by Henry Graves and Company and J W Allen and Company, 1 July 1842. In summer of 1839 the British-Indian Army of the Indus, under the command of Sir John Keane, captured Kandahar and the fortress of Ghazni. They then advanced north towards Kabul. Dost Mohammed fled from the capital and Shah Shuja was duly installed as Emir in August 1839. Atkinson (1780-1852), who accompanied the invasion force as a Superintending Surgeon, sketched several views of the Kabul bazaar during the British occupation.
