From Beato's notes: "…Kawasaki is the boundry within which Foreigners are at present confined in the Edo direction. At the ferry there is a guard of Japanese Yakunins stationed for the purpose of preventing persons unprovided with a passport, or unaccompanied by an escort from the Custom House at Yokohama, from crossing the river Lego. Founded in 1128, it is the headquarters of the Chizan sect of Shingon Buddhism.
