William Beilby (1740-‑1819) North Tyne, 1774 Watercolour and pencil Height 10.5 x Width 16 cm TWCMS : M741
The North Tyne River starts near Hexham and feeds into the River Tyne. In this painting, two gentlemen anglers in tailcoats are fishing on the North Tyne. On the right a low cargo boat known as a keel is being poled across the river by two men. This is one of a group of drawings William Beilby made not long before he moved from the North East to London in about 1779. Beilby was a Newcastle decorator of expensive glassware, and a drawing teacher.
