Image description

Castle Acre Priory, Priory Road, Castle Acre, King'S Lynn And West Norfolk, Norfolk. A view of the west front of the priory from inside the ruins. In the centre of the west front is a huge equilateral arch that possibly had trefoil decoration in the light. Below this is an entrance with a rounded arch at the outer wall, and a basket handle shape at the inner wall. Under this is a figure against a fence that spans the entrance. To the left is a tower three storeys high with two windows at the top and one in the middle section. Further left is the roof of the Prior's Lodging, a 12th century lodging altered in the 15th and 16th centuries. The priory is a 12th century Clunaic Benedictine Priory founded in 1090 by William de Warrene, second Earl of Surrey. The site is currently looked after by English Heritage.
