James McQuade (1829-85) volunteered as colonel of the 14th New York Infantry at the outset of the war. He commanded his whole brigade at the Battle of Malvern Hill in 1862, but malaria prevented him from pursuing a promotion, and he left the army in 1863. He was brevetted as a Brigadier General after the war, and later served as mayor of his native Utica, NY.
