Other ranks’ glengarry badge, 33rd (The Duke of Wellington’s) Regiment, 1874 (c). Raised in 1702 and in existence until 1881 when it was amalgamated with the 76th Foot, the 33rd’s nickname was ‘The Havercake Lads’. This came from the regiment’s recruiting sergeants marching in front of recruits with a havercake or oatcake stuck on their swords. The motto of this unit was ‘Virtutis Fortuna Comes' which means 'Fortune is the Companion of Courage'. This was the family motto of the Duke of Wellington.
