Athaliah hears the Proclamation of Joash, 837 BC. After the wholesale murders of Jehu, the massacre of the seventy princes of Israel and the forty-two princes of the house of David, Athaliah, the daughter of Ahab and wife of Jehoram, put the whole royal family of Judah to death. But her grandson Joash escaped, and was concealed by Jehoiada and Jehosheba, his wife. Six years later Joash was proclaimed king in the temple, and Athaliah, hurrying in to learn the reason of the rejoicing, was taken prisoner and executed.
