Image description

A close look at one of the Herat minarets shows damage to the ancient tilework January 31, 2002. The minarets, erected in the late 1400's, were part of a complex built by Queen Gawhar Shad, during the central Asian Timrud Empire, which included a madrassa (place of learning) and musalla (place of worship). Six of the original twelve minarets have withstood years of war and earthquakes and are the tallest sturctures in the ancient city of Herat. REUTERS/Caren Firouz CJF
