Chile's Senate is due to ratify a free trade pact between the United States and Chile late October 22, 2003, which is the final hurdle before the pact comes into effect. The bilateral agreement, which may mark the way of the future since the movement toward regional trade pacts has wavered, will immediately reduce tariffs to zero on 85 percent or more of products traded between the two countries, when it goes into effect early next year.
