This is one of John Wilson Carmichael's most outstanding seascapes. It shows the Sunderland lifeboat on the left, going to the aid of the ship with a broken mast in the foreground. On the right is a drifting ship, which has also lost part of its masts. The composition is constructed around sweeping curves of dark and light. Carmichael was the best-known North-East painter of sea subjects in the 19th century;
