This is one of the small and detailed pictures that Carmichael made for a series of engravings showing the Newcastle to Carlisle Railway (opened 1835-39). Many people are sitting on the roofs of the railway carriages as well as inside. The slatted trucks seem to be carrying hay. On the far side of the river is the winding gear of a coal mine, and a funnel-shaped kiln for firing glass or pottery. The picture is left uncoloured to make it easier for the printmaker to reproduce it;
