Early 20th century Device for electrotherapy (after Reiniger-Gebbert-Schall, Erlangen, ca.1900), Technik-Museum (Technology Museum) Kassel, Germany, Electrotherapy was applied during WW I especially to soldiers known as 'shakers' or 'tremblers' who developed these symptoms (PTSD) due to the prolonged and extreme physical and psychological stress of trench warfare. Initially they were stigmatised as malingerers and traitors to the fatherland, only later to be rehabilitated. Electrotherapy was both a genuine therapeutic attempt, but also a form of torture, when the electrodes were applied to the testicles of the sufferer to rid the 'malingerer' of 'defeatism'.
