Image description

Artist and construction worker David O'Neal is seen at his home in Effort, Pennsylvania, June 20, 2002 with a cross he made from World Trade Center rubble. When he wasn't cutting down twisted iron, O'Neal built a 28-foot-wide, eight-foot-high slabe of black granite dedicated to those who died on Sept. 11. O'Neal spent hours etching free-hand what he saw - the smoke, dust and burning rubble in which he worked alongside firefighters, police officers and emergency workers.
