Image description

The Original Mausoleum, c 353 BC. This magnificent monument was erected by Artemisia to her husband Mausollus, who was the satrap and practical ruler of Caria. It was from this building that the name "mausoleum," for funerary edifices of this kind, originated. The architects employed were Satyros and Pythios. It is recorded that there was not time to finish it during the life of Artemisia, and, according to Pliny, it was completed by the artists as a labour of love. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c.1920). Note: Image has been digitally enhanced to facilitate repro.
