MEXICAN GENERAL GIVES PRESS CONFERENCE ON DRUGS ARREST, 2002-01-15 (photo)

Brigadier General Roberto Gustavo Garcia Vergara, commander of the Mexican army's seventh military region, anounces the arrest of the third most important man of the Tamaulipas state based drug cartel, declining to give the man's name during a press conference at the Defence Minsitry in the capital January 15, 2002. The arrest came after several months of other arrests and seizures. Osiel Cardenas, reputed head of the Tamaulipas based cartel, has a a two million dollar bounty on his head offered by the U.S. state department, and his top two lieutenants are also wanted by U.S. officials, although the general refused to confirm whether the arrested man was any of these people.
