Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee, c.1862 (engraving)

Image shows the charge of General Grant riding his horse in the Battle of Shiloh, TN, which took place in April, 1862. Confederate soldiers are shown fleeing before the cavalry charge, and in the foreground a tattered flag held by a falling soldier is about to be trampled by Grant's horse. Shiloh was a major battle in the Western Theater of the Civil War. The Confederates under General Albert Johnston launched a surprise attack on General Ulysses S. Grant's Army of West Tennessee. After initial success the Confederates were eventually forced to retreat by Union counter-attacks. At the time the battle was the bloodiest in American history, with over 10,000 casualties on either side. Johnston was killed during the battle.
