Julie Mavros holds the world's most expensive Alpaca named Shambrooke High Society on her property near the township of Boorowa, located 400 kilometres south-west of Sydney November 19. The Australian-born Alpaca was bought by Mavros for a world-record price of A90,000 (US35,700) at the recent Australian Alpaca Association's annual show, topping the previous record of US07,000 set in 1994. With Australia's A billion (US.8 billion) a year sheepwool sector struggling, Australia believes it is headed towards becoming the leading producer of the South American animal's fleece by the year 2004, with moves to export garments made from the alpaca fleece to Asia and the United States.
