Image description

Eugène Delacroix took the subject of this painting from Goethe's 1773 play Götz von Berlichingen. Delacroix chose to depict the dramatic moment when the medieval knight Götz succeeds in having his soldiers capture his enemy, Weislingen. Gottfried "Götz" von Berlichingen (c. 1480 – 23 July 1562), also known as Götz of the Iron Hand, was a German (Franconian) Imperial Knight (Reichsritter) and mercenary.
