St. Thomas's church at Barras Bridge was built to replace the medieval chapel of St. Thomas the Martyr on the Quayside, which had been demolished for the widening of the entrance of the Tyne Bridge. Dobson and his contemporary John Green were invited by the town's Common Council to submit designs for the new church. Dobson's Gothic scheme, in the Early English style, was chosen.
