An Inspection of Sher Shah Sur's Great North Road, 1542. Sher Shah Sur was the father of modern Indian Administration, following the lead of his great predecessor, Firoz Shah Tughlak of Delhi (1351-1388), and giving it to his successors, Akbar the Great (1556-1605), Warren Hastings (1774-1785) and Lord Dalhousie (1848-1856). Among his beneficial works was the Great North Road, now part of the Grand Trunk Road of Northern India. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c.1920).
