Portrait of Justus Lipsius (1547-1606), philosopher and secretary of Cardinal de Granvelle, nearly three-quarter-length, turned slightly to the right, in dark dress with a white ruff and a dark cloak edged with fur, his right hand upraised. Engraved by Schelte à Bolswert. From a set of grisaille portraits by Van Dyck of artists and distinguished persons, for engravers to work from. The panels, with the exception of M.188, are all in identical English 18th Century carved and gilded Palladian frames, with tongue-and-leaf outer edge and foliate sight edge.
