Artwork by Thomas Henry Ellis (1814-1886) View of Crystal Palace in background, gardens in foreground, `Crystal Palace Sydenham.' engraved beneath image, `Drawn Engd. by T.H.Ellis. 51 Jewin St. City London, Designed by Sir Joseph Paxton F.L.S. First Column erected Augt. 5th.. 1852. opened by the Queen June 10th.. 1854. Cost One Million sterling. Length 1608 feet. 304 feet Broad. Centre Transept 120 feet span. & 192 feet high:those of the side Transepts 124 feet high & 72 feet high'. The new `People's Palace' was served by two railway stations - a high-level station near the Grand Avenue owned by the London, Chatham and Dover Railway, and a low-level station in front of the building owned by the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway.
