Rot. of the county of Northumberland &c. &c. &c. First Patron of the LIFEBOAT,//under whose encouragement this valuable establishment has been the means of saving the lives of some hundreds of shipwreck'd Mariners//This plate (by permifsion) is most respectfully inscribed by His Grace's most obedient and most humble servant Henry Greathead.' Henry Greathead of South Shields built the first true lifeboat in 1790. It was lined with cork so that it was almost unsinkable. The lifeboat was built with funds given by North East people, and the Duke of Northumberland paid for the lifeboat house at North Shields. The lifeboat is shown saving the crew of a ship wrecked near Tynemouth. This print was published by Greathead.
