The mascot of the Irish Guards. The use of mascots as a means of bringing good luck to the owner is a custom which has been common since the beginning of history. Certain animals are especially esteemed as bringers of good luck, and a black cat is always welcomed by the superstitious as a favourable omen. Many regiments of the British Army keep animals as regimental mascots, and our picture shows the Irish Guards on parade with their pet, an Irish wolfhound, proudly marching in front of the band. Other famous regimental mascots are described on Card No. 36. Illustration for one of a set of 50 cigarette cards on the subject of Interesting Customs and Traditions of the Navy, Army and Airforce issued by Lambert & Butler in 1939.
