A rare and important embroidery of the ‘Platt'' of Chatsworth, 1590-1600, originally worked as a cushion panel, the linen canvas ground worked predominantly in tent stitch in silks with the castellated west elevation, with central arched entrance revealing the inner courtyard with fountain and cove, above the windows on the central entrance are worked two shields, one bearing the Cavendish stags, the other the Hardwick arms, above them a female statue, the fifty-three latticed windows are worked in pale blue silks within dark brown frames, circular grotesque medallions to the entrance tower and the pediments of the larger fallery windows on each side, yellow tent stitched chimneys emit curls of embroidered smoke, black bees and giant butterflies spot the sky with a large smiling sunburst to the centre, the terrace to the front with black and white ‘tiled' path and pedimented walls, country glimpses of green fields with blooms to the sides, the outer border worked with blue, pink serpents enclosing dog rose medallions, Hardwick coats of arms to upper and lower borders, 1ft. 10¾in. by 3ft. 5in.; 58cm by 106cm; within elaborate frame carved with putti
