Image description

British (English) School. Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Man and a Boy (formerly said to be Sir Henry Arundell Bedingfeld, 3rd Bt (1689-1760) as a Boy with his Tutor Thomas Marwood (d.1718)),British (English) School, inscribed on left of the canvas 'Aetatis sua 64 Anno Dom 1640 and inscribed 'Thos Marwood' lower right:1640. A three-quarter-length portrait of a man standing on the left, turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, whilst resting his left hand on a young boy's head. He wears a plain, black doublet under a black cloak. His large, plain, white collar has a knotted band and strings at his throat. His beard is small and pointed, with fair hair turning grey. He has a neat moustache and a head of brownish hair, worn short. In his right hand he holds a hat. Half-length portrait of a young boy, standing on the right, with his fair hair in a basin-cut bob. He is seen full-face, with a rosy complexion and is wearing a black, buttoned doublet with a white collar. He holds an exercise book and pencil, ready poised. The identification with the 3rd Baronet must be incorrect, as the painting is dated to 1640. Oxburgh Hall, Norfolk (Accredited Museum)
