Anglo-Saxon Crown, 1938 (colour litho)

No Anglo-Saxon regalia has survived; this crown of square shape is based on a depiction of King Edgar the Peaceful (c.944-75) King of England (959-75) wearing a crown with three trefoils from a book of grants made by the king to Westminster Abbey in 966 (Cotton MSS Vespasianus A.VIII); King Edgar was crowned at Bath and anointed with his wife, Aelfthryth, setting a precedent for the coronation of English queen consorts and the service, devised by Saint Dunstan, forms the basis of British coronation ceremonies today; from a series of illustrations of famous royal crowns published by the cigarette manufacturer, Godfrey Phillips, to coincide with the public interest in royalty and regalia after the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937;
