Crown of Bavaria, 1938 (colour litho)

Made in 1806 for Maximilian I (1756-1825), promoted King of Bavaria in 1806 by Napoleon; crown was made by Napoleon's favourite goldsmith, Martin-Guillaume Biennais (1764-1843); not worn by any of the Wittelsbach Bavarian sovereigns but displayed at official ceremonies; Krone des Königreich Bayern; kept today at the Schatzkammer der Residenz München; from a series of illustrations of famous royal crowns published by the cigarette manufacturer, Godfrey Phillips, to coincide with the public interest in royalty and regalia after the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937;
