According to Russian legend, brought from Constantinople to Kiev as a gift from the Byzantine Emperor, to crown Vladimir Monomakh (1053-1125); oldest crown in the Russian regalia held in the Kremlin and of late 13th or early 14th century workmanship with 8 sectors of gold decorated with precious stones and surmounted by a cross; used from the 14th until the 17th centuries for the coronation of Russian Tsars and replaced in 1721 by Peter the Great with the Imperial Crown of Russia; from a series of illustrations of famous royal crowns published by the cigarette manufacturer, Godfrey Phillips, to coincide with the public interest in royalty after the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937;
