Image description

What does the monument commemorate? The Monument commemorates the Great Fire of London, and was erected as a reminder at the order of Charles II. It stands in Fish Street Hill, a little more than 100 ft from the site of the house in Pudding Lane where the fire is said to have originated. Of the Doric order, the Monument was completed in 1677, from the design of Sir Christopher Wren, and is 202 ft in height. The column contains a spiral stairway of 345 steps of black marble, and is surmounted by a metal urn 42 ft high. The cost was about £14,000 in the money of the day. Illustration for one of a set of 50 "Do You Know?" cigarette cards issued by Carreras in 1939.
