Why do women wear wedding rings? The custom of rings dates back to the time when a woman was merely a piece of property, and the ring was fastened round the neck or body, so that she might easily be secured to her savage mate. Religious rites caused the location of the ring to be altered to the bride's finger, and there it served as a two-fold symbol; to announce a union, and provide a warning. There are numerous other observances attending entry upon matrimony all over the world; most of these are survivals of the primitive, and the present form of wedding ring comes from the Roman betrothal ring.
