Image description

Sewn by English women probably in Kent to a Norman brief, the embroidery illustrates the events leading to the Norman invasion and conquest of England by an army led by Duke William of Normandy and the death of King Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. King Edward the Confessor (c. 1003-66) speaks his last words to Queen Edith at the Palace of Westminster while priests minister to him. He is laid in state in the Great Hall and Harold is offered the crown.
