The Organ. Early Form of Organ. The pipes of early organs at first sounded all together, those not required being silenced by means of the fingers or hands. Slides or tongues of wood were then placed beneath the pipes to control the admission of the wind. These are shown on the right of the wind-chest, and may be said to represent the keyboard of the organ of to-day. Modern Organ. The picture shows part of one of the largest electric organs in the world with some 18,000 pipes and 232 stops. It really comprises eight organs; great, choir, swell, solo, echo, chorus, ethereal, and pedal, besides a piano, chimes, gongs, and harp.
