British (English) School. Oil painting on panel, Portrait of a Lady, inscribed as aged 50 in 1580, called Olive Sharington, Mrs John Talbot (d.1646), but probably Grace Sharington, née Farington, and previously Paget, English School. Inscribed: with the name of the sitter and Ano Dni 1580 Aetatis suae 50. Must, however, have been painted earlier, circa 1545/53. A three-quarter-length portrait, to left, wearing a black dress with goffered collar and cuffs; there are four ropes of pearls around the sitter’s neck, and she wears a decorated flat cap; she holds a glove in her left hand, whilst her right rests on the arm of a chair decorated with leafy marquetry; in the background, a column to the left and a curtain with a golden fringe and decorative edging to the right.
