"Nelson's Bridge." At the Battle of St Vincent in 1797 Nelson was Commodore of one division in Jervis's fleet, with his broad pennant in the 74-gun Captain. Realising that several of the Spanish ships would escape, he disobeyed strict orders and cut them off; in their confusion the 80-gun San Nicholas fouled and remained locked in the yards of the 112-gun San Josef. After hammering the former, Nelson led his boarders who swept all before them and then, scarcely waiting for their surrender, rushed on and captured the giant San Josef as well - "Nelson's patent bridge for capturing first-rates" the Fleet called it. Illustration for one of a set of 50 cigarette cards on the subject of Sea Adventure, issued by Hignett Brothers in 1939.
