Abraham A. Anderson

American painter, 1847-1940

Artist, rancher, philanthropist, and patron. He began his career as a businessman and succeeded in the dry goods and manufacturing business. In 1876 Anderson married Elizabeth Milbank, an heiress. He studied art in Paris, and became an accomplished portraitist. In 1900, Anderson commissioned the 10-story Bryant Park Studios building from the New York society architect Charles A. He played a significant role in the preservation and development of the Yellowstone region, and his own home, Anderson Lodge, became the first administrative headquarters for the Yellowstone Forest Reserve in 1902, and he served as first Superintendent of Forest Reserves under Theodore Roosevelt.
