Artist associated with Arte Povera. Known for his highly realistic simulations of natural surfaces (e.g. riverbeds, leaves) made of synthetic materials; the simulations were mass-produced on a roll like commercial carpet and were available for purchase by the square meter. Through such works Gilardi proposed a reconnecting of man and nature through mass production and distribution. Gilardi was also influential in the conception of two important international Arte Povera exhibitions. After becoming dissatisfied with the what he saw as the commercialization of the arts, Gilardi stopped creating art in the 1970s; he later resumed, creating interactive, computer-based environments.
