Barbara Littler was educated at a grammar school in Manchester before going to a teacher training college where she studied English and Art. Only after becoming Deputy Head of a comprehensive school in London’s East End did she teach Art on a regular basis. Littler later studied watercolour painting and life drawing as a part-time student at Barnet College, Hertfordshire.

As an ex-colleague and friend of Joan Thewsey and Brin Booker, Littler had supported the work of Five Women Artists Plus since its foundation in 1981 but it was her early retirement in 1991 which enabled her to join the group as an assistant organiser and later as a painter. She paints a wide variety of subjects and has a love and facility for landscape and architecture. Her favourite media are watercolour and pastels though she sometimes uses acrylics and gouache.

Littler’s work expresses the essence of quiet rural places with attention to detail. A number of her works feature the quiet aspect of the coast, beached boats, and deckchairs when the crowds have left. She has a good feeling for mood and atmosphere which is conveyed in these works. Littler has exhibited at the Westminster Central Hall, many of her works are to be found in private collections
